What is a fleece jacket and what are its properties?
A fleece jacket is warm mainly for two reasons: the structure of the material and its insulating properties. Fleece is made from polyester, which has a porous structure, allowing it to trap air, acting as a thermal insulator, retaining body-generated heat, and minimizing heat loss.
Fleeces are lightweight, breathable, and excellent at retaining heat. However, they are less effective and more permeable in damp or very windy conditions without additional protection. To prevent heat loss in winter and wet conditions, we recommend layering:
• First layer: thermal underwear to wick sweat away from the body.
• Insulating layer: fleece, preferably with a higher weight for extra warmth.
• Outer layer: a windproof and waterproof jacket to protect against adverse weather conditions.
This way, you create an effective layering system using fleece, ensuring comfort and protection in various winter conditions.
Fleece weights
Popular fleece weights used in clothing are 100g/m², 200g/m², and 300g/m².
• 100g/m²: Lightweight, best for warmer days or as a base layer.
• 200g/m²: Medium weight, versatile, suitable for most weather conditions.
• 300g/m²: Thick and warm, best for cold conditions providing a high level of warmth, often used as an outer layer.
At Helikon-Tex, we only offer warm fleeces with very high weights, up to 390 g/m². Such high weight means that our fleeces are among the warmest products of this type available on the market.
