How does NIR/IRR functionality reduce silhouette contrast?
NIR, or near infrared, is a range of electromagnetic radiation invisible to the human eye but detected by night-vision devices and measuring instruments. Night-vision devices amplify the limited ambient light as well as near-infrared radiation reflected by objects; some systems also use their own IR illumination. Materials with uncontrolled reflec- tance characteristics may there- fore stand out sharply against the background and reveal the user’s position.

NIR/IRR performance applies not only to the main fabric but also to visible trims and components. As a result, apparel and gear work together as a coherent camouflage system.

APPAREL WITHOUT NIR PERFORMANCE
Materials with uncontrolled reflectance characteristics may produce a brighter, high-contrast signature in the near-infrared range. Under night vision, the silhouette stands out more clearly from the terrain.
APPAREL WITH NIR PERFORMANCE
Materials matched to the reflectance characteristics of woodland terrain reduce silhouette contrast in the near-infrared range. The user’s signature blends more effectively into the operational environment.

Your entire setup affects silhouette contrast. Build your camouflage system from apparel to gear
Products Field in PL Woodland camouflage are engineered for NIR/IRR performance. We select all visible fabrics and components so that their absorption, reflection and transmission of radiation match the natural woodland environment as closely as possible. The solution is system-level and covers both apparel and gear. Every material is verified in the laboratory and in the field using spectrophotometers and analog night-vision devices.
KEY NIR/IRR PARAMETERS:
- NIR RANGE - approx. 700–1100 nm (the range we tested)
- REFERENCE ENVIRONMENT - woodland terrain
- SYSTEM SCOPE - apparel, gear, fabrics and visible component
- VERIFICATION - spectrophotometric measurements and tests using analog night-vision devices
